Electrochemical Machining (ECM)

Electrochemical metal processing is based on the principle of electrolysis.

The tool is connected as a cathode, and the workpiece as an anode to a DC voltage source. The workpiece processes the charge exchange, which takes place in an aqueous electrolytic solution between cathode and anode. Contours, annular channels, grooves, or inner forming are thus generated with no contact, and with the highest precision.

The material removed thereby falls out from the electrolytic solution as a metal hydroxide. The processing is effected independently of the metal microstructure. Both soft and hard materials can be processed. The components are not stressed, either thermally or mechanically.
